On Being Josh
"You know, at the end of the day, I can only be me. I could try to convince you that I'm Leonardo DiCaprio; I could try to convince you that I'm Edward Norton; I could even try to convince you that I'm Julia Roberts. But I'm Josh. And I don't want to spend my time projecting a false image."
"I think everybody--no matter what position you are in life you are always being tempted to stray from your own ideals, from your own path. It's crucial that you don't wander--even though sometimes you succeed, and sometimes you fail. Given my own recent history, I can tell you there is all kinds of pressure to join and be one of the crowd and to sacrifice what it is you believe. It makes it much more difficult to walk your own path. But I think you have to try."
"I'm sick of looking at my own face. I've seen myself so many times now, it's just annoying now."
On Love
"I’m not really the type to wear my heart on my sleeve. I would let someone know if I liked them, but it takes a while for me to fall in love."
"I'm more clumsy than slick when it comes to approaching girls. I wish I were slick!"
On Fame
"I got two marriage propsals from Japan after the Mighty Ducks movies came out. From Japanese girls. Yeah. The nation of Japan. They wrote me letters and expressed their desire to have my hand in holy matrimony. It's bizarre."
"We were filming like a block and a half from a high school, doing what's called a 'process shot,' where you are in a car mounted on a flatbed, and you just drive around the block all day. The first time we drove around the block, there were three or four girls. Next time, there were 10 girls, and eventually there were, like, 100 girls... It became a mob scene, an exponential thing. Some were screaming, "Josh!" And some were yelling, "Pacey!" So, it kind of paved the way for me to have an attitude for the rest of the film. It's important for an actor to have his own space for his ego."
On Television
"At this age, I like television because it gives me the opportunity to work all the time and to work out the kinks in my acting that could take years otherwise."
"On a show like Dawson's Creek, the most interesting part is that Pacey keeps growing--he is going to make good choices and bad choices and develop. What you're learning at 16, you're progressing at leaps and bounds. So, I wouldn't say I'm protective--I'm curious. I am enjoying the ride. I don't want to inhibit the writers from being able to do anything because the fun is in doing different things."
On Missed Oppurtunities
"They sent me the script [for American Beauty] and asked me to go in but I wasn't available for the audition and I didn't think I'd be available for when they were going to shoot it. I see a lot of movies when I'm shooting "Dawson's" in Wilmington [North Carolina] because there's not really a whole lot else to do. So, Katie [Holmes], my friend Mike, who's my new roommate down there, and I went to see American Beauty. It was so good, we didn't speak for almost 20 minutes after we got out of the theater, then we couldn't stop talking about how brilliant it was. I thought, "Man, am I an idiot for not taking that audition?" but then I thought, "Wes Bentley was really, truly awesome."
On Education
"I mean I'm not a grades-orientated person, I have no desire to be an A or B student, that's not what drives me. But just learning in general. And going to school just to -- sit amongst, you know, a group of my peers and reap the benefit of having 40 minds tackling a problem which means that you are inevitably going to have 40 different views on which way to do it. And just learning from that. I think it's great."
"For me, the desire exists less to get myself a degree than to just go and have the whole college experience, and throw myself into the brain pool and see if I can swim."
On Other Celebrities
"Uma Thurman is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. She has those wicked eyes- it looks like there is such a brain behind those eyes."
"I think Ryan Philippe is the real deal. He's the only next-generation guy I've met where I'm like 'Yup, that guy is not a pretender.'"
"I've had more of an opportunity to work with Katie Holmes, which is incredibly enjoyable. I think she is really one of the best actresses on the market right now. She forces you to bring your best stuff to the table, because if you don't, she just completely overpowers you."
On Personal Time
"My life is busy at the moment, but I have the weekends off, so there’s plenty of time to just sit back and twiddle my thumbs!"
"On the weekends, when I’m not working, I try to do just that - not working. I read, listen to CDs, and I watch Law and Order and The Simpsons. In warmer months, I spend most of the weekend at the beach."
"Dawson's Creek shoots 10 months a year, so it's a grind. I usually reserve my weekends for sleeping."
On Pet Peeves
"I hate people saying anything stupid. I don’t really suffer fools very well at all. When people are acting like idiots, not that I’m not guilty of doing the odd idiotic thing myself from time to time, but when people say stupid things, it stresses me out. I have a pretty thick skin about people coming up to me and saying things to me when I’m out, I don’t really mind that too much. but when people are just loud and annoying, it drives me crazy."
