"Pacey takes a shot at comedy"

"Dawson's Creek" star Joshua Jackson has more reason to go to Dublin than just pubs, history or trying to meet one of the Corrs. His grandma lives there.

"She does, indeed," he says. "Grandma Rosie was recently very offended -- 'Dawson's Creek' is considered a soap opera in England, it may even be considered a soap opera here -- but I was nominated for two British soap-opera awards, but I lost to Englishmen. She thinks there was a conspiracy."

He's not, though, steeped in traditional culture. "Not a big traditional Irish-music fan," he says, "wasn't raised with Irish dancing. Although, apparently, according to legend, my mother can do a little bit of Irish dancing herself, although I've never seen it.

"The coolest thing I ever saw, music-wise, was the last time I was in Ireland, we were in Galway, because my uncle ran the Quays pub, which is in Galway.

"This was many years ago, and we were sitting there in the middle of the day. It's me and my mother and my sister and a couple of my cousins, and in walks this very unassuming woman who stands up at the podium and starts to sing in the most beautiful Gaelic voice you ever heard.

"You turn around, and it's Sinead O'Connor, with the old Paddies, who just picked up a harp and sang with her, in a language that I don't speak a word of, but it was gorgeous."

Jackson, who plays witty but academically challenged high-schooler Pacey, took some time early this year to head to Austin, Texas, to star in a movie called "Lone Star State of Mind." He became rather fond of the town. "It's very hip, and it's oddly liberal for a state sending George Bush to the White House. There are college towns, and then there's Austin, because these people at the U of T, they're not just going to school, this is their way of life. It's absolutely amazing."

What sort of movie is this? "It's a comedy. It is alledgedly a comedy. At this point, it is a comedy. We'll see when it's all done. It's a character-driven romantic comedy, which I guess would be the best way to put a tag on it."

Earlier this season, Christian Kane, who stars on "Angel" -- which airs on the WB Tuesdays at 9 p.m., one day before Jackson's show, which airs Wednesday at 8 p.m. -- headed to Wilmington, N.C., to film an episode of "Dawson's Creek."

Recalls Kane, "Like two old men, we're sitting, waiting for a shot to get set up, on two rocking chairs on the front porch. We're sitting there rocking, and I looked at him and -- I said, 'You know what you need, Josh? You need a nice romantic comedy, a great-written romantic comedy. You need a 'When Harry Met Sally.' That's what's going to take you over the top. You would provide such entertainment for America if you had something like that, you really would.'"
