Politically Correct
Seventeen Magazine, October 2000
Joshua Jackson isn't only concerned with whether viewers are happy that Joey went for Pacey over Dawson, this young Democrat (who has dual citizenship -- Canadian and U.S.) also has a passion for politics.
Have you always been politically active?
A bunch of my friends and I protested logging in the Carmanah Valley.
What excites you about politics?
As citizens, we have the opportunity to be the arbiters of our destiny to some extent, which is why it's important to vote.
Why should young people pay attention to the upcoming election?
Because my generation is going to inherit this country. And while some of the issues -- like whether or not social security can be saved -- seem pretty inconsequential to the average 18-year-old, that is our future.
What if you don't like either candidate?
Personally, I think that it should be a requirement of citizenship that everybody vote. If you don't agree with Governor George W. Bush or Vice President Al Gore, vote against them.
Will Dawson's Creek incorporate anything about the upcoming election into the story line this season?
I hope so. The producers promised that they will. The show parallels real life, and this is a major event; it will be the first election that some of the characters can vote in.
Have you encouraged your costars to enter the voting booth?
I don't really have to nudge them. They're all pretty aware. For some, like Katie [Holmes] and Michelle [Williams], it will be their first election. It's James' [Van Der Beek] and my second, and Kerr's [Smith] and Meredith's [Monroe] third.
What do you think about celebrities getting involved in politics -- or even running for office?
Just because someone has lived in the public eye, I don't see why that should stop them from running. If their goal is to carry out a political mandate rather than to increase their celebrity, I think it's fine.
Would you ever consider running?
I'm Canadian, so I could never run for president, but I could see myself being involved in politics later in life.
Which president would you most like to have served as VP?
It's got to be John F. Kennedy -- who wouldn't? Just to be in Camelot. Plus I would have met Marilyn Monroe!
If you could nominate anyone for president, who would it be?
Steve Martin. You have to take all this political stuff with a grain of salt and have a sense of humor
